Wall Books

Wall Books

Because most of my sculptural book objects are too vulnerable to be shown at outdoor art shows, given the wind, floods, and hands fresh from kettle corn, I have created a series of wall books. They are essentially flat books behind glass in frames — sewn as books, sometimes with text, always with imagery.

The imagery is a digital composite of hills, clouds, and maps. The series of short poems, printed on vellum and coated with shellac speak of migration, finding home, experiencing despair and also joy.

I found an old picture among my late husband’s things, and all it said was “Grandmother Nancy was part Cherokee.” I digitally combined her dignified pose in a chair with rocks photographed on the east coast and a woodland landscape, for I believe she must have made her way west to Missouri, perhaps by choice, perhaps by edict.

When we visited the old Yuma Territorial Prison last March, I was not prepared for the desolate beauty of it -the arches, the dark cells, the bleached ground, and the slow, warm-looking river just visible in the distance. This hanging piece is a combination of photographs taken there. The piles of prison bars are mounted on shallow boxes, and the river and the baked mud are presented as accordion books. The frame is studded with nails.
